Background
The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has backed a $70 million project to expand Jordan’s natural gas infrastructure and improve energy access for industrial zones. Contracts have been signed to supply natural gas to the Al Rawda and Al Muwaqqar industrial cities.
The project will establish a pipeline network connecting the two industrial areas with Jordan’s existing natural gas network. It forms part of the government’s Economic Modernisation Vision and aims to strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure while providing industries with a reliable and sustainable fuel source.
The expanded gas network is expected to lower production costs, improve operational efficiency and increase the competitiveness of Jordanian industries. It could also support investment, production and job creation by making industrial operations more efficient.
The agreements were signed during an ADFD delegation visit to Jordan in the last week of August. The delegation, led by ADFD Director General Mohammed Al Suwaidi, also held meetings with Jordanian officials to review funded projects and discuss future cooperation.
Al Suwaidi said the UAE and Jordan have a strong strategic partnership and added that ADFD will continue financing projects that support economic resilience, sustainable growth and long-term development.
As part of wider support, ADFD also signed an approximately $300 million financing agreement with Jordan’s Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. The funding will support the government budget, development programmes and fiscal stability.
ADFD also attended the signing of a $40 million contract to build and equip five government technical schools. The project aims to strengthen vocational education and provide skills suited to labour-market needs.
ADFD’s partnership with Jordan dates back to 1974. It has financed more than AED 9.4 billion in development projects across the country.
