Parminder Lall: Advancing Cybersecurity Through Responsible Leadership

Data security is now a boardroom priority rather than just a technical concern. As cyberattacks become more frequent and sophisticated, businesses face increasing scrutiny from regulators, partners and customers, all of whom expect personal information to be protected responsibly.

The pressure is felt most strongly in the payments industry. Any organisation that handles card data must show that its safeguards work, and that assurance usually comes from an independent assessor who examines the controls and reports the findings fairly. The work calls for technical knowledge, but it depends just as much on sound judgment and honest communication.

Parminder Lall has built his career in the cybersecurity industry. As Founder & Chief Executive Officer of 1 Cyber Valley, he leads a security assessment firm that supports organizations worldwide. His early experience working on the client side gave him a practical understanding of the challenges businesses face in meeting security standards.

His approach to cybersecurity focuses on helping organizations strengthen their security without hindering business growth. He also recognizes the importance of the people behind the work, believing that strong teams are essential to effective security.

Let’s explore how Parminder’s experience, leadership philosophy, and commitment to responsible cybersecurity are shaping 1 Cyber Valley’s approach to security assessments, customer trust, and team development!

A Journey Built on Experience and Learning

Throughout his career, Parminder has been fortunate to learn from outstanding mentors who taught him not to complain about a heavy workload. He believes that people often complain when they have no work, so it makes little sense to complain when work is helping you progress towards your goals. This mindset strengthened his determination, leadership skills, and commitment to achieving his objectives, however difficult the journey.

Beginning his career in customer service with a major British airline shaped the principles he now shares with his team at 1 Cyber Valley. Putting customers first remains central to the company’s approach, supported by service-level agreements (SLAs) that require timely action. When things do not go as planned, the team follows a defined service recovery process to minimise any impact on the customer.

His experiences outside the professional environment also influenced how he leads. Playing sports in his youth helped him develop the patience and temperament to coach others. Training new players prepared him to guide his team in how they work and serve customers.

At the same time, listening to candid feedback has helped him become more self-aware and strengthen his judgment. He recognises that leadership is not always about getting things right. When things go wrong, it is about picking yourself up and improving through the lessons learned.

Leadership Through Accountability and Trust

Today, Parminder’s leadership philosophy is to set a clear direction, listen carefully, and help the team do its best work. He values honesty, curiosity, and accountability, while aiming to give people the support and autonomy they need to grow.

His approach has evolved from focusing mainly on his own work to creating the conditions for the team to succeed. He has learned to set clearer priorities, delegate with trust, and listen to a wider range of perspectives before making decisions. For him, leadership is less about having all the answers and more about helping a team find its direction, grow, and deliver together.

When things go wrong, he focuses on learning and solving the problem rather than assigning blame. As he explains, “At the end of the day, the buck stops with me, so my team cannot ever be blamed.” This belief places responsibility on the leader while allowing team members to learn from mistakes and continue improving.

Trust, in his view, develops through consistency, honesty, and dependability. He listens to people’s concerns, follows through on commitments, and explains decisions clearly, even when the news is difficult. He also gives people room to do their work, recognises their contributions, and takes responsibility when he makes a mistake.

When working with individuals who have different perspectives and expectations, He first seeks to understand what matters to each person rather than assuming everyone sees things the same way. He listens without rushing to respond, asks clarifying questions, and acknowledges differences respectfully. He also explains his reasoning, makes expectations clear, and invites people to speak up when something is not working.

For him, the principle remains straightforward: “Actions, as they say, speak louder than words, and I always follow this mantra.”

Leading with Empathy

Empathy plays an important role in how Parminder works with both his team and customers. It helps him understand what people may be experiencing before deciding how to respond. In challenging situations, this means listening carefully, asking questions rather than making assumptions, and acknowledging concerns, even when clear boundaries or difficult decisions are necessary.

He also brings this approach into day-to-day interactions. He tries to communicate respectfully, adapt to different needs, and focus on solving problems without losing sight of the people affected.

His personal leadership experiences have helped shape these principles, which he aims to bring to his interactions with the team and customers. For him, understanding different perspectives does not mean avoiding difficult conversations. Instead, it means approaching them with consideration while remaining clear about responsibilities and decisions.

This balance supports his wider leadership philosophy: people should feel heard and treated fairly, even when their expectations cannot always be met.

Innovation with Security at Its Core

In cybersecurity, innovation requires finding better ways to protect people and systems as threats evolve, without treating security as a barrier to progress. Parminder believes leaders must encourage curiosity and responsible experimentation, use new technologies thoughtfully, and learn quickly from incidents and near misses.

He also believes security should be part of business decisions from the beginning. This means listening to the people who use and maintain systems and measuring success through stronger resilience, faster detection and recovery, and greater trust, rather than simply counting the tools deployed.

As he points out, “Not bringing security into early discussions is always a recipe for disaster and an expensive one at that potentially.”

Earlier in his career, he viewed innovation as introducing new ideas or technologies into systems and processes that were often outdated. Over time, he has come to understand it as solving meaningful problems in a way that is practical, sustainable, and valuable to the people affected.

He has also learned that innovation does not always require a major breakthrough. It can involve a series of thoughtful improvements informed by collaboration, experimentation, and lessons learned from setbacks.

For 1 Cyber Valley, this approach connects security expertise with the needs of businesses seeking to protect their organisations while continuing to develop.

Adapting to Technological Change

The rapid evolution of technology has reinforced Parminder’s belief that leadership and professional growth depend on staying curious and adaptable. No one can know everything, and he sees leadership less as having every answer and more as helping people learn, make sound decisions, and navigate uncertainty together.

Continuous learning has therefore become essential to his approach. He remains open to new tools and ideas while evaluating their risks, costs, effects on people, and long-term value. Professional growth, in his view, involves building not only technical knowledge but also judgment, communication, and the ability to help others adapt.

These qualities are particularly important in cybersecurity, where teams must respond to changing threats and make decisions with care. He believes that meeting these challenges requires people to learn together and support one another.

As he puts it, “In cybersecurity we’re in this together, and as the old cliché goes, teamwork makes the dream work!”

Navigating Challenges and Leading Through Change

Some of the most challenging moments in Parminder’s leadership journey have involved acting under uncertainty, particularly when technology or circumstances changed faster than the information available at the time. These situations required balancing security with progress.

He is a strong advocate for allowing teams to progress and innovate, but never at the cost of putting customers, their systems, or their trust at risk. Through experience, he has learned the importance of listening with empathy, making difficult decisions when necessary, and setting clear boundaries while maintaining accountability.

Another challenge has been helping a medium to large team adapt to change. He recognises that not everyone moves at the same pace, and leadership requires an understanding of these differences. Learning to adapt his own approach has reinforced the importance of resilience.

These experiences have taught him that leadership involves more than setting expectations. It also requires listening, exercising sound judgment, and helping people work through change while maintaining a clear sense of responsibility.

Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders

For aspiring leaders, Parminder identifies self-awareness as a major quality. Understanding personal strengths, weaknesses, and how one’s actions affect others provides an important foundation for leadership.

Clear communication is equally important. He encourages future leaders to listen actively, explain decisions clearly, and remain open to honest feedback. In the cybersecurity assessment field, sound judgment is also essential. Leaders must weigh the available evidence and their customers’ priorities, especially when there is no single right answer.

He also stresses the importance of owning mistakes, recognising good work, and giving credit where it is due. These qualities should not have to wait for a formal leadership title. People can develop them by taking responsibility for a project, mentoring a colleague, or helping a team work through a challenge.

For him, leadership begins with everyday actions that build confidence, strengthen relationships, and help others succeed. These habits prepare people to take on greater responsibilities while maintaining the accountability and integrity expected of them.

Building 1 Cyber Valley and a Lasting Legacy

One of Parminder’s most personally significant achievements has been founding 1 Cyber Valley in 2020. His decision followed more than twenty years of experience, beginning on the client side as a PCI Project Manager before he became a QSA for an Irish security company. The skills and business acumen he gained through these roles gave him the confidence to build and run a security business of his own.

What began primarily as a PCI DSS QSA company has since expanded into other security frameworks and product offerings. Today, 1 Cyber Valley has twelve team members spread across the four corners of the globe and a client base of more than 250 clients across six years of operation. The company is licensed to work in every region of the world, an achievement he considers a testament to his team’s efforts.

From the beginning, he made the welfare and work-life balance of the team a priority. Everyone works remotely and has the opportunity to serve customers across the globe. For him, building a business has also meant creating an environment where people can contribute, grow, and work together without losing sight of their lives outside work.

Looking ahead, Parminder hopes his legacy will continue through the people he has led. He wants to build a team that feels more capable and confident, where people treat one another with greater trust and respect, and where systems and processes make good work sustainable.

He also hopes the impact of his leadership will extend beyond a single achievement, allowing people to contribute safely, learn to lead in their own way, and carry forward the values of integrity, curiosity, and care.

Customers remain an equally important part of this legacy. Their decision to trust 1 Cyber Valley as a partner of choice in securing their organisations represents a responsibility that Parminder takes seriously.

Ultimately, his leadership journey reflects a commitment to building a business where security, customer trust, and team welfare remain closely connected. Through continued learning, responsible innovation, and accountability, he aims to help both his team and his customers move forward with confidence.
